Stockport County were left to rue missed opportunities after a dominant performance yielded only a point in a goalless draw at Sheffield Wednesday. The result on Saturday leaves Jim McNulty's side ninth in League One with 10 points from their opening seven matches.

County enjoyed the lion's share of possession at Hillsborough and registered three times as many shots as their hosts. Despite that control, they could not find the finishing touch to turn their superiority into a victory. The visitors created several clear openings, with midfielder Callum Camps forcing a sharp save from Wednesday goalkeeper David Stockdale in the first half. Winger Jack Diamond also saw a low drive flash narrowly wide of the post after cutting inside from the left flank.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Henrik Pedersen was quick to credit the visitors. "First, I think we play against a very strong Stockport team," Pedersen said. "I think it's for sure the best team we have played against this season." The Owls' best chance fell to striker Michael Smith, whose header from a corner was comfortably gathered by Stockport's Ben Hinchliffe.

McNulty was proud of the performance but shared his players' frustration. "It's a good point, and a clean sheet is welcome for sure," the Stockport manager said. "I believe most people in the stadium believe we should have won today. The performance level was excellent from start to finish."

He felt the only thing missing was a final touch of conviction. McNulty told his squad afterwards that he believes they are capable of more and should carry no doubt about their ability to win such games.

The stalemate was Sheffield Wednesday's second consecutive 0-0 draw at home, following a similar result against Wigan Athletic the previous week. For Stockport, it continues an inconsistent run of form, which has seen them follow a heavy 4-3 defeat to Leicester with this solid away display. Their record now stands at three wins, one draw, and three losses.

Jack Diamond remains the club's top scorer this season with four goals, and his threat will be needed when County return to Edgeley Park. They host Peterborough United next Saturday, a side currently sitting 23rd in the table. Defender Fraser Horsfall is expected to be available after missing the trip to Hillsborough with a minor knock.

With the team showing they can compete with and outplay established sides on the road, the focus now shifts to converting that control into maximum points. The squad's current form and league position are detailed on our standings page.
