Stockport County could move to sell defender Josh Dacres-Cogley in the January transfer window. The 30-year-old full-back has fallen down the pecking order and is out of contract next summer, meaning the club risk losing him for nothing.

Dacres-Cogley joined the Hatters from Bolton Wanderers last January on an 18-month deal. He was a signing for former boss Dave Challinor and helped the side reach last season's League One play-off final. Since Jim McNulty's arrival from Rochdale, however, his opportunities have dried up. He has made only five appearances this campaign, with just three of those coming in the league.

Future in doubt

With his deal running until June 2027, the club face a decision. Selling him in January would secure a fee, whereas keeping him until the summer would see him leave as a free agent. At this stage of his career, Dacres-Cogley needs regular football, which he is not getting at Edgeley Park. He provides useful defensive depth, but letting him go without a replacement would be a gamble.

He would likely be a solid addition for another League One club seeking defensive reinforcement. In total, Dacres-Cogley has played 23 times for Stockport County. Before his move, he made 125 appearances for Bolton, scoring four goals. He came through Birmingham City's academy, played 30 times for their first team, and also had spells at Crawley Town and Tranmere Rovers.

Current context

Stockport County's form has been strong without him, sitting third in League One on 16 points. They are on a three-game winning run, including a 3-1 victory over Barnsley last time out. The squad's current depth is detailed on our squad page. McNulty's side are just three points behind leaders Plymouth Argyle. Their next fixture is a home match against Charlton Athletic on Saturday, a game that presents an opportunity to close the gap at the top further.
