Stockport County suffered their first defeat of the League One season, losing 2-0 away to Luton Town on Wednesday night. Goals from Nahki Wells and Callum Marshall in the second half secured the points for the hosts at Kenilworth Road.
The Hatters took control after the break. Wells broke the deadlock in the 50th minute, finishing a move that exposed the Stockport defence. Marshall then sealed the result with Luton's second goal in the 76th minute, ensuring the visitors left empty-handed.
This loss ends Stockport County's perfect record but they remain in a strong position. The club sits fifth in League One with six points from three games, following two wins and now this loss. Their recent form reads WLW. Dave Challinor's side have scored nine goals and conceded four, giving them a healthy +5 goal difference early in the campaign. They are currently four points behind the early leaders, Huddersfield Town. Fans can track the evolving picture on our standings page.
Before this match, Stockport had made a bright start to life back in the third tier. Their attacking output has been a feature, with those nine goals coming from their opening fixtures. The defensive solidity shown in the first two games was missing at Luton, however. Managing the squad through a busy schedule will be key, and details on player availability can be found on our injuries section.
Attention now turns immediately to a quick turnaround and another away trip. Stockport travel to face Wigan Athletic on Saturday, September 5th. Wigan currently occupy 24th place in the table, making it a significant opportunity for County to bounce back. This fixture is part of a packed early-season schedule, all of which is listed on our fixtures page. The team will need to regroup quickly to secure a positive result at the DW Stadium.
